## Snapshot

A beautiful, mysterious Parisian hostess whose hidden husband and unaccountable virtue keep every salon guessing at the truth.

## Who they are

Madame Firmiani receives the best company in Paris while going nowhere herself, and her salon is a stage on which observers, contradicteurs, and old men of the world rehearse their theories about her. She is credited with too many adorers to have a lover, and her husband is a creature of fancy whom no one has ever seen. Her charm and reserve make her the object of collective speculation, and the question of who she really is becomes the quiet engine of the story.
