# Comte de Fontaine — Shorts from Scenes from Private Life character guide

> Comte de Fontaine in Shorts from Scenes from Private Life by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** The Comte de Fontaine, Monsieur de Fontaine, Fontaine, Monsieur le Comte de Fontaine

**First appearance:** 0003-the-ball-at-sceaux

## Snapshot

A royalist courtier who trades wit and loyalty for appointments, then must marry off three daughters on royal favor.

## Who they are

Monsieur de Fontaine has parlayed his easy conversation and political tact into sinecures for himself and his three sons, but his daughters remain unprovided for. He approaches the King with the delicacy of a man who knows that favors, like interest, must be drawn sparingly. His maneuvering exposes how Restoration society converts intimacy with power into dowries, marriages, and the quiet architecture of family fortune.
