## Snapshot

A sheltered shopkeeper's daughter whose innocence is bartered in a marriage arranged for business advantage rather than love.

## Who they are

Augustine Guillaume grows up behind the counter of her father's prosperous Paris shop, her world bounded by domestic duty and filial obedience. When a suitor of higher social standing is chosen for her, she submits with the passivity of a daughter trained never to question paternal judgment. Her marriage becomes a quiet tragedy of mismatched souls, as her simple devotion meets a husband whose ambitions and tastes lie elsewhere. Her story exposes the human cost of treating marriage as a commercial transaction.
