## Snapshot

A young Polish exile whose fortune, charm, and sudden Parisian celebrity make him both the envy of salons and the prisoner of his own good luck.

## Who they are

Count Adam Laginski arrives in Paris as a refugee from the Polish rebellion, but his mother's prudent mortgage of the family estates has left him with eighty thousand francs a year and an ancient name that even the Faubourg Saint-Germain must respect. His marriage to Clémentine du Rouvre, once mocked as a mad passion, becomes the season's triumph, and by 1836 he is the fashion itself. Yet the very ease of his position — adored, wealthy, transplanted — sets up the tensions of a man whose happiness depends on a world he can never quite call his own.
