Bankhead moves through the story as the smiling menace behind every negotiation, a man whose wealth and connections make him harder to refuse than to outwit. Where Sills and Taylor dream of cashing in, Bankhead simply plans to take, and his quiet visit to an unsavory acquaintance sets the burglary in motion. His appetite for the formula turns a lucky invention into a trap.
