Short Science Fiction · Question
How does Short Science Fiction develop the theme of Bureaucracy and Systems?
Answer
Short Science Fiction by Noel Loomis develops Bureaucracy and Systems across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.
A recurring theme is the absurdity and entrapment of complex bureaucratic systems, such as the point-based economy in 'Parking, Unlimited' or the insurance-derived Central Audit Bureau, which replace meaningful work and freedom with meaningless point-chasing.
The Central Audit Bureau and its point system represent an all-encompassing bureaucratic machine that controls citizens' lives, even offering jobs within its own structure.
