Arturius works the linecasting machines alongside High-Pockets Jones, and when a line sticks at transfer he arrives with a scowl diluted by self-satisfaction. He knows the equipment, and he knows more than he lets on about who is really behind the strange disruptions. His ambiguous loyalty keeps the narrator guessing whether Arturius is a saboteur, a guardian, or something stranger, and his presence gives the labor-versus-management conflict a human, watchable face.
