## Snapshot

The Hard-Luck Man of the Swamp, a Venus prospector carrying stolen stones and a daughter's dream of strawberries through a pass ruled by spies and fences.

## Who they are

Grant Russell has spent three years on Venus chasing the stake that will let him reclaim his daughter Beth from a welfare home, and now he finally has something worth protecting. But The Pass is a trap of informers and monopolists, and Relegar the Uranian sees everything, so Grant must hide his stones and bargain with a Jovian fence for protection he cannot trust. His worn-down decency and desperate calculation make him the kind of man readers root for even as every choice narrows.
