## Who they are

In O'Flaherty V.C., Teresa is the mother whose son Dennis returns home a decorated British Army recruit, and her neighbors' contempt for the uniform is a wound she carries alongside her love for him. She wants to hold her family together and be proud of her boy, but the community's hostility and her own muddled loyalties leave her caught between maternal affection and political disgrace. Her divided heart gives the play's comic patriotism its sting, making the domestic cost of Dennis's enlistment visible before the argument turns rhetorical.
