## Who they are

Prince Patiomkin is the Empress's lover and most powerful courtier, a man who justifies his excesses by the sheer scale of his personality. Drunk and reckless, he hauls the protesting Captain Edstaston into Catherine's bedroom, then collapses in a heap, tearfully insisting that being made a prince is no reason to stop drinking. His blend of buffoonery and dangerous intimacy with the throne unsettles the court and drives the play's collision between Russian extravagance and English propriety.
