## Who they are

Augustus presides over a government office where he issues contradictory orders, refuses his clerk a raise on patriotic grounds, and boasts into the telephone about the secret document listing anti-aircraft emplacements that he is foolishly carrying around. His pomposity and total incompetence make him the perfect mark for the beautiful woman who comes to steal it. Shaw lets him embody the home-front bluster that mistakes self-importance for service, and the comedy turns on how easily such a man is gulled.
