## Who they are

Ermyntrude is a woman of expensive habits and frank appetites, raised in a rectory but formed for luxury. When her father's income collapses, she refuses to descend to what he calls respectable poverty and announces she will become a lady's maid to a princess until she can marry another millionaire. Her breezy defiance of clerical thrift and her eye for the main chance set the comic tone of The Inca of Perusalem, where romance and money are never far apart.
