## Who they are

The Princess Dashkoff is a courtier whose sense of imperial dignity is constantly offended by Patiomkin's antics and Catherine's tolerance of them. When she denounces the drunken prince as an insult to the throne, the Empress dismisses her with the observation that she has no sense of humor. Her rigid outrage provides the moral counterpoint that Shaw uses to expose the absurdity of courtly decorum in the face of genuine human appetite.
