## Who they are

Blanco is the outlaw every man in the territory wants hanged, and the play opens with him already caught, already defiant, already spoiling for a fight with anyone holding a Bible or a badge. His contempt for respectable piety collides with a sudden, unwelcome impulse toward mercy when a dying woman's child is laid at his feet. Shaw uses him to test whether a man with no use for religion can still stumble into something that looks like grace.
