Chapter 2
Act II
Cashel Byron reveals his profession as a prizefighter to Lydia Carew, who is torn between her love for him and her social prejudices. Lucian and Bashville react with horror, but Lydia ultimately celebrates Cashel's victory in the ring. The chapter explores themes of social class, gender roles, and the conflict between nature and convention.
Chapter 3
Scene I
Cashel Byron reveals his secret profession as a prizefighter and his mother's identity as an actress to Lydia Carew, leading to a heated debate about social class, honor, and vocation. Lydia offers to marry him if he abandons boxing, but Cashel refuses, insisting on his honor. Bashville, the footman, strikes Cashel in a fit of jealousy, and Lydia and Cashel depart together, leaving Bashville to lament his unrequited love.
Chapter 4
Scene II
The scene is set at the Agricultural Hall in Islington, where a boxing match is held before Cetewayo and his Zulu chiefs. Cashel Byron fights Paradise, who cheats by tearing off his gloves and attacking with bare knuckles, leading to a chaotic melee. Cetewayo and his chiefs join the fray, causing a general panic. Cashel rescues Lydia and defeats the Zulus, but is bitten by Paradise, causing Lydia to faint.
Chapter 5
Act III
Lydia is writing her father's life at Wiltstoken when a policeman arrives investigating a prizefight. Cashel bursts in seeking sanctuary, having just fought Paradise. Lydia hides him from the police. Adelaide Gisborne arrives, revealing herself as Cashel's mother. Cashel surrenders, but Lucian brings an Order in Council granting amnesty and making Cashel Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset, also decreeing his marriage to Lydia. Lord Worthington proposes to Adelaide, who accepts. Cashel pardons all involved and leads the group to St. George's Church for his wedding.
