The narrator describes the stark contrast between the new, bourgeois city that sleeps by night and the old city that comes alive after dark, a labyrinth of filthy, narrow streets near the port. He ventures into a low tavern with a companion, where they encounter sailors, crude young women, and a raucous atmosphere of tobacco, absinthe, and cursing in many languages. The women, after being given five francs, confide about their lives and the dangers of drunken sailors.
Chapter 4

The narrator recounts two memorable nights in a port city. First, he describes a mysterious old musician who enters a bar, lies on the floor, and plays an improvised cigar-box guitar with astonishing virtuosity, captivating the crowd. The narrator embarrasses himself by offering money, which the musician proudly refuses, instead giving him coins. The old man vanishes afterward, leaving the narrator unable to find him again. The second night involves getting lost near fortifications, being escorted by drunken sailors, and later bonding with English sailors over tobacco and song in a Spanish bar, ending with a joyful rendition of 'Rule, Britannia.'

A student identifies a group of card sharpers on a steamer, including the famed Balunsky. He recruits the captain's mate as an accomplice, bribes him, and plans to run a high-stakes gambling scheme, demonstrating his cold calculation and Nietzschean self-regard.
