## Who they are

Three months adrift and out of fuel, Webber has kept his crew's hopelessness from hardening into panic, and he receives Friden's impossible sighting with the patience of a man who has run out of explanations. He admits the ship is lost, counts the survivors aloud, and still refuses to believe his own eyes, half-convinced the whole crew has gone crazy together. His wary, methodical approach to the earthlike houses and lake gives the story its early tension: a rational man walking deliberately toward something reason cannot hold.
