Ribby is a genteel, house-proud dog who keeps her best china, her pink-and-white pie-dish, and her opinions about Cousin Tabitha Twitchit's cats in careful order. She bakes a tender mouse-and-bacon pie for Duchess and sets out her best tea-set, never suspecting that her friend is reading the invitation as an invitation to swap pies behind her back. Her meticulous preparations—the stiff lower oven door, the trip to the village shop, the muffins from Timothy Baker—make the coming mix-up all the more delicious, and her hurt dignity the more affecting.
