> Pigling Bland in Short Fiction by Beatrix Potter.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Pigling, Bland

**First appearance:** 0018-the-tale-of-pigling-bland

## Snapshot

One of Aunt Pettitoes's eight hungry piglets, sent off to market with his brother, whose misadventures strand him alone in a world of suspicious strangers.

## Who they are

Pigling Bland is a polite, slightly anxious young pig whose journey to market goes sideways almost immediately, leaving him dependent on the dubious hospitality of Mr. Peter Thomas Piperson. Told not to meddle and threatened with skinning if he does, he nonetheless pokes around the cottage — and hears a smothered voice answering his song from behind a locked cupboard door. His quiet kindness, pushing peppermints through the keyhole one by one, sets the story's central relationship in motion.
