## Snapshot

A washerwoman with hairpins sticking wrong end out of her cap, who returns every animal's lost laundry and then vanishes up the hill.

## Who they are

Mrs. Tiggy-winkle lives behind a door in the hill at Cat Bells, where she washes and irons the small brown coats, moleskin waistcoats, and shrunk blue jackets of half the countryside. Her brown, soap-wrinkled hands and her sideways tea with Lucie make her at once homely and faintly uncanny. When she runs up the hill and shrinks into a prickled hedgehog, the tale leaves the reader to decide what was dream and what was washing.
