## Who they are

Mr. McGregor works his vegetable beds with his back turned, but he misses nothing—he catches sight of Peter Rabbit at the corner and turns the lost jacket and shoes into a scarecrow for the blackbirds. He is less a villain than an implacable boundary: the fence, the gate, and the wood beyond it all take their meaning from his presence. His pursuit gives Peter's flight its stakes and his mother's camomile tea its justification.
