## Who they are

Mittens is one of Tabitha Twitchit's kittens, sister to Moppet and Tom, and she is discovered trembling inside a dairy jar while the household searches for a thief. Her breathless account of an enormous rat who made off with a pat of butter and the rolling-pin sends the mothers racing upstairs, certain that poor Thomas is in danger. Frightened but observant, she turns a kitchen mishap into the clue that drives the rescue.
