## Who they are

Lucie is a small girl in a pinafore whose pocket-handkins keep vanishing, so she follows a trail of tiny wet footprints up the hill behind Little-town to a door set straight into the rock. Inside she meets Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, a stout, prickly laundress who irons waistcoats for Cock Robin and tablecloths for Jenny Wren, and who returns Lucie's handkerchiefs freshly goffered and shaken out. Lucie's polite curiosity and the hedgehog's bustling pride in her clear-starching turn a simple errand into a small, warm wonder.
