## Who they are

Frustrated by the farmer's wife taking her eggs, Jemima Puddle-duck sets out to find a quiet nesting place and is charmed by a bushy-tailed gentleman who offers his woodshed, already heaped with feathers, and promises to watch over her nest. She lays nine eggs there and never once questions his interest in them, nor the herbs he asks her to fetch — sage, thyme, mint, onions, parsley — for a savoury omelette. The collie Kep listens to her story with his wise head tilted, and his quiet questions mark the moment the tale turns from idyll toward danger.
