# Isola — Short Fiction character guide

> Isola in Short Fiction by Catherine Louisa Pirkis.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0003-iii

## Snapshot

A servant whose blind, dog-like fidelity to her mistress drives her to sell twenty years of earrings and carry a young girl across France.

## Who they are

Isola belongs to Aimée, a woman who fled a cruel husband for the Convent of St. Geneviève, and she tells Aimée's daughter Amy the story with a bias that quietly poisons the girl against her father. She cannot comprehend Aimée's lingering love for the man who hated her, yet she obeys her mistress's slightest wish without question. Her well-filled purse, bought with the savings of a lifetime, funds Amy's journey to her mother and makes Isola the engine of a flight that looks, to everyone left behind, like an abduction.
