# Yegorushka — Short Fiction character guide

> Yegorushka in Short Fiction by Anton Chekhov.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Mechanically Yegorushka

**First appearance:** 0000-a-living-chattel

## Snapshot

A small boy sent across the steppe to school, fed caviar and Latin by a radiant old priest who lectures him on saints and study.

## Who they are

Yegorushka is a child on a long journey, ill and homesick, being delivered toward a grammar school he does not yet understand. Father Christopher brings him sturgeon and French bread, then delivers a sermon on studying mathematics, philosophy, and languages so that God may show him what to be. The boy's wide, uncomprehending eyes are the story's lens — the steppe, the adults, and the strange summons of a future all pass through them.
