First appearance: a living chattel
As a major figure in Short Fiction, Yegorushka is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Fyokla's eight-year-old brother with red hair, who gets his hand stuck in a tree while trying to get a cuckoo's egg for his sister.
Yegorushka is a child on a long journey, ill and homesick, being delivered toward a grammar school he does not yet understand. Father Christopher brings him sturgeon and French bread, then delivers a sermon on studying mathematics, philosophy, and languages so that God may show him what to be. The boy's wide, uncomprehending eyes are the story's lens — the steppe, the adults, and the strange summons of a future all pass through them.
