Short Fiction · Question
How does Short Fiction develop the theme of Love and Sacrifice?
Answer
Short Fiction by Vsevolod Garshin develops Love and Sacrifice across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.
Love appears as a redemptive but often painful force, with characters sacrificing their own happiness for others, such as the narrator giving up Masha, the artist's devotion to Nadejda Nicolaievna, and Sonia's selfless support.
Ivan Nikitin's desperate love for Nadejda leads him to both a passionate embrace and a potential suicidal act.
The narrator sacrifices his own happiness by stepping aside so Masha can marry her new love, even serving as best man at their wedding.
Nadejda Nicolaievna agrees to model despite her fatigue, and offers to 'put on the expression' to help the picture succeed.
