## Snapshot

A slow, silent peasant recruit who cannot form fours but swabs floors with devotion, finding in endless fatigue duty an escape from the terror of thinking.

## Who they are

Nikita leaves his village wrapped in sheepskin, staring at the snow as if searching for something forgotten, while his wife Praskovia collapses and the women wail for a week. In the regiment he proves hopeless at drill but becomes a wonderful worker, so content with carrying wood and mopping floors that punishment ceases to be punishment. His mute, submissive endurance matters because it quietly indicts every system that measures a man by what he cannot do.
