First appearance: from the reminiscences of private ivanoff
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Nikita Ivanoff is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Appears in a story involving medical examination for military service.
Nikita leaves his village wrapped in sheepskin, staring at the snow as if searching for something forgotten, while his wife Praskovia collapses and the women wail for a week. In the regiment he proves hopeless at drill but becomes a wonderful worker, so content with carrying wood and mopping floors that punishment ceases to be punishment. His mute, submissive endurance matters because it quietly indicts every system that measures a man by what he cannot do.
