**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Alexander Michailovich, Stebelkoff

**First appearance:** 0003-coward

## Snapshot

A painter possessed by a single imagined canvas—the old Cossack Ilia in his vault, reading the Sermon on the Mount he cannot obey.

## Who they are

Stebelkoff is the artist who will not settle for thirty or three hundred pictures, only the one he can see whole: the cave, the wax candle, the peasant hands trembling over the Gospel. He narrates Ilia's dilemma with such force that his listeners laugh and then fall silent, because the old warrior's refusal to turn the other cheek is also his own. His obsession with the impossible image drives the story's meditation on belief, violence, and what art can hold.
