## Who they are

Rogov appears in the narrator's memory as Vanichka, the beloved student, now a drunk on the street who rings the bell sharply and anxiously, then hides around the corner. The narrator reasons that Rogov wanted him to know he was drunk, to be witnessed in his fall. His late-night bell becomes a small, haunting emblem of the distance between a teacher's hopes and a pupil's unraveling.
