Ivan Ivanovich has acquired the tastes of an intelligent man and prizes them above all else, though his craving for truth has cost him position after position. When he talks, the pre-reform world parades before his listeners: inspectors, bailiffs, local Jupiters in their grandeur and ignorance. His refusal of a comfortable post in Russia, spoken with wry self-awareness, reveals a man whose love for his country is inseparable from his compulsion to expose it.
