# Galya — Short Fiction character guide

> Galya in Short Fiction by Vladimir Korolenko.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0001-short-fiction

## Snapshot

A sharp-tongued village girl who once loved a workman and refuses to be traded for a miller's second wife.

## Who they are

Galya is the miller's old sweetheart, a woman whose quick hands and quicker tongue make her a match for any scheme he brings to her garden. When the miller proposes to marry Motria while keeping Galya as a workman's wife, she answers with pitchforks, scratches, and a threat to leave him eyeless. Her fierce, unillusioned refusal exposes the miller's greed as something that cannot be smoothed over with cunning talk. She matters because she is the story's clearest voice of ordinary dignity against the miller's expanding appetite.
