Edith Harnham leads a quiet, disappointed life as the wife of an elderly wine-merchant, her deeper nature never stirred until she begins composing love letters on behalf of her maid Anna. What starts as a favor becomes an emotional vortex: she writes from her own heart while signing another's name, and the magnetic reciprocity that develops between her and the correspondent is both her secret pleasure and her undoing. She matters because her story is Hardy's most intimate study of how longing, when denied a legitimate outlet, will find a dangerous one.
