## Who they are

Christopher Swetman stands on the mill bridge at dusk, swinging hands with Agatha in the last light before departure, buoyed by Macaulay and the promise of a meritocratic career abroad. He is earnest, a little pompous about bureaucratic jobbery, and blind to how much Agatha dreads the separation she pretends to bless. His going is the hinge on which the story's long consequences turn, making his hopeful farewell the quiet engine of everything that follows.
