Concepts
Ideas that structure Short Fiction by Selma Lagerlöf — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Love and Sacrifice
Love is portrayed as a transformative and often painful force, requiring personal sacrifice, as seen in Petter Nord's devotion to Edith, the fisherman's wife's endurance of deception, and the mother's unwavering love for her son Reuben.
Class and Poverty
The stories explore the struggles of the poor and working class, highlighting social hierarchies, economic hardship, and the shame of poverty, as in the fisherman's village, the shoemaker's fall, and the plight of the farmer's daughter in court.
Deception and Truth
Deception, both self-deception and lies to others, drives many plots, such as Börje's false promises to his bride, the wife's hidden guilt in the mourning house, and the courtroom denial of paternity, with truth often leading to redemption or ruin.
Death and Mortality
Death is a recurring presence, depicted with both terror and peace, as in the detailed funeral customs at Svartsjö, the ghostly visions of Mamsell Fredrika, and the graveyard as a place of solace and love.
Nature and the Supernatural
Nature is deeply intertwined with human emotion and the supernatural, from the Spirit of Fasting haunting Petter Nord to the enchanted forest and glaciers in 'The Legend of Reor' and 'Old Agnete,' reflecting inner states.
Family and Legacy
Family bonds, inherited traits, and the weight of legacy shape characters, such as the Ingmar family's honor, Uncle Reuben's posthumous influence, and the destructive family pattern of alcoholism and cruelty.
Suffering and Redemption
Suffering is a path to redemption or moral awakening, as Petter Nord's grief leads to rebellion against the Spirit of Fasting, the deserted wife's remorse, and old Mattsson's pursuit of marriage despite ridicule.
Gender Roles and Power
Women navigate restrictive roles, facing judgment, abandonment, and economic dependence, as seen in the fisherman's wife, the court plaintiff, and the old maidservants, yet some, like Mamsell Fredrika, achieve quiet influence.
