# Maurits — Short Fiction character guide

> Maurits in Short Fiction by Selma Lagerlöf.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Poor Maurits

**First appearance:** 0024-the-story-of-a-country-house

## Snapshot

A self-satisfied student engaged to a baker's daughter, driving toward his rich uncle's estate with his future and his fiancée's dignity both at stake.

## Who they are

Maurits has chosen love over his parents' approval, but he has not chosen to stop calculating — his uncle Theodore's fortune, mines, and furnaces are the real prize of the journey. Beside him sits Anne-Marie, pale and small, listening to his lectures on sacrifice and his uncle's tastes, hoping she will not be sent away at a glance. His sensible pride and her quiet dread collide as the carriage rolls toward a man who may decide everything.
