Philip Launay is the young master of Launay, brought down from London with a physician when his mother falls gravely ill, and thrown into constant company with his cousin Bessy. He is fondly serious, certain that his mother has no right to arrange his marriage, and impatient of subterfuge; his love for Bessy is declared plainly and held against the family's expectations. His insistence that affection must override maternal design sets the terms of the story's central struggle.
