## Who they are

Nora is to become Mrs. Frederic F. Frew in January, and has already half-turned American in spirit, defending the Union against her future husband's jibes. With only a hundred pounds from a grandaunt for her trousseau, she jokes about casting in her wedding veil to feed the starving, and pressures her aunt and uncle into lending their boiler for the poor. Her warm, restless charity and her divided loyalties give the story its tender, unsettled heart.
