# Mrs. Thompson — Short Fiction character guide

> Mrs. Thompson in Short Fiction by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Thompson

**First appearance:** 0060-christmas-at-thompson-hall

## Snapshot

A widowed East India officer's wife lingering at Le Puy, drawn to a decorated French gentleman whose name is all she knows of him.

## Who they are

Mrs. Thompson, comfortably provided for but friendless in England, has settled at the Hôtel des Ambassadeurs where her customs and economies suit her better than Torquay or Leamington. Day by day she stays, ostensibly to oversee her daughter's schooling, while M. Lacordaire, grizzled, soft-voiced, and wearing the Legion of Honour, sits beside her at every meal. Her slow, unacknowledged drift toward this courteous stranger gives the story its delicate suspense.
