## Snapshot

A gentle Albany lawyer's daughter living quietly at Saratoga Springs, Susan Bell must navigate courtship while her timid mother fears traps and flirtations.

## Who they are

Susan is the younger daughter of the widowed Mrs. Bell, who has raised her girls in a modest cottage at Saratoga Springs, taking in a few steady boarders each summer to make ends meet. Unlike the wealthy girls who flood the resort with trunks of muslin and waiting carriages, Susan and her sister Hetta watch the season's gaieties from the margins, their mother anxious lest anyone think she is scheming for husbands. Susan's story turns on the delicate question of whether affection can be trusted when circumstances offer so little room for it.
