First appearance: Miss Sarah Jack, of Spanish Town, Jamaica
As a major figure in Short Fiction, Miss Sarah Jack is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
A strong-willed, patriotic Jamaican woman living in Spanish Town; she pressures Maurice into politics and orchestrates his reconciliation with Marian.
Miss Sarah Jack lives in a ghostlike house at Spanish Town, rich, ungainly, and never silent about the perfidy of England or the apathy of Jamaica's best men. She needles Maurice Cumming for hiding at his estate instead of taking his father's seat in the Assembly, and her eloquence finally moves him to stand. Disliked but respected, she embodies the colonial conscience that will shape Maurice's public life and, indirectly, his private one.
