First appearance: Malachi's Cove
As a major figure in Short Fiction, Mally Trenglos is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The protagonist, a hardworking and fierce young woman who gathers seaweed in the cove and rescues Barty Gunliffe from drowning.
Mally Trenglos stands apart in her Cornish community, a young woman whose loyalties and desires run against the grain of respectable expectation. Her determination to choose for herself creates the central tension of the story, pitting personal feeling against the judgments of family and neighbors. She matters because her struggle gives the early and middle arc its moral weight, asking what love is worth when it costs a woman her place in the world.
