## Who they are

Isabel moves through the Christmas festivities with a composure that costs her dearly, retreating to her room when the day's excitement nearly overcomes her. When Maurice calls her into the study, she goes silently, and emerges the happiest girl in Craven, her arm around his waist. Her fierce seriousness about Christmas and her quick indignation at Maurice's flippancy reveal a girl whose feelings run far deeper than her manner admits.
