## Snapshot

A pretty Munich cousin who welcomed Herbert Onslow into her family's Ludwigs Strasse home, Isa Heine grows from girlish helpfulness into a woman whose heart is quietly at stake.

## Who they are

Isa was only seventeen when her cousin Herbert came to board with the Heines, and she treated him at first as one more member of the household—mending his linen, visiting his room, noting his preferences at table without any flutter of imagination. But Herbert, blushing as he accepted the arrangement, had already seen her beauty and felt its pull, and the two years that follow transform what was simple domestic intimacy into something far more charged. Isa's slow awakening to the difference between family kindness and romantic love lies at the center of the story's emotional arc.
