Frederic F. Frew is a well-travelled, well-read Pennsylvanian living on a modest inheritance, engaged to Nora Field after months in Liverpool on family business. He is kindly and generous but hard and narrow in his aspirations, contemptuous of England and of all things small, and his politics are as fierce as his affection is steady. His marriage to Nora carries her across the Atlantic into new loyalties, and his running quarrel with her uncle over the war gives the courtship its comic friction.
