## Snapshot

A farmer whose life is bound up with the land he works and the affections he cannot easily separate from it.

## Who they are

Barty Gunliffe belongs to a world where love and land are tangled together, and where a farmer's choices about both carry consequences for everyone around him. He is a man of the soil, practical and rooted, but the story places him in circumstances where the heart's demands and the farm's demands pull in different directions. His dilemma gives the narrative its emotional weight, asking what a man will sacrifice when the two things he values most cannot coexist.
