> Ulrich von Gradwitz in Short Fiction by Saki.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Ulrich, a von Gradwitz

**First appearance:** 0002-the-blood-feud-of-toad-water

## Snapshot

A landowner whose family feud has hardened into a private religion, he patrols his forest borders with a rifle and a grudge older than himself.

## Who they are

Ulrich von Gradwitz belongs to that class of men for whom a boundary line is a moral absolute, and the neighboring family across it are less people than an inherited insult. His wealth and position give him every comfort except the one he actually wants: vindication. The feud has outlived its original cause and now sustains itself on his own vigilance, making him a man defined less by what he owns than by what he refuses to let go.
