# Octavian Ruttle — Short Fiction character guide

> Octavian Ruttle in Short Fiction by Saki.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Octavian

**First appearance:** 0043-the-penance

## Snapshot

A nephew on the edge of a formidable family, caught between his aunt's vanished authority and the household's giddy new freedoms.

## Who they are

Octavian observes the Umberleigh household from a comfortable distance — close enough to be summoned, far enough to escape the worst of Crispina's rule. When his aunt disappears, he becomes a wry witness to the family's sudden loosening: bicycles, bad school reports, and searches conducted in unlikely Parisian quarters. His detached, amused narration gives the story its comic register and its quiet skepticism about domestic order.
